Chemistry is a science that describes matter and its transformation. Chemistry is a fascinating field of study because it touches every aspect of our existence in some way or the other. Chemistry is referred to as central science because it joins together mathematics, physics, biology, earth and environmental science and many more. Knowledge of the nature of chemical processes and chemicals provide insights into a variety of biological and physical phenomena. Learning Chemistry is worthwhile because it provides an excellent basis for understanding the physical universe.

It ain’t a secret that Chemistry is tough, but what makes it so challenging?  Part of the reason why Chemistry is so hard is due to the fact that one has to re-learn math the same time they learn chemistry. There are plenty of equations and formulas to solve in Chemistry. Hence, it becomes necessary to be good at mathematics.  Apart from this, in Chemistry, there are over 100 elements to remember, lots of suffixes and prefixes that mean specific things and an entire system of writing chemical equations. There is more to Chemistry than just learning the concepts. One learns to communicate and interpret the way Chemistry is described.

While studying concepts like inductive effect in Chemistry can be hard, there are a few tricks that can make studying the subject a lot easier. Following are a few tips that can make studying Chemistry easy and fun.

  • Choose a quality textbook

Choosing a textbook just because it seems easy is not the right way to select a textbook. Reading such textbooks might make you feel like you have learnt chemistry without really understanding the essential principles. To find a good textbook, take a look at the university bookstore and find out the textbooks that the college professors refer.

  • Acronyms and mnemonics

A mnemonic is a memory aid that is used to improve long-term memory and helps to make the process of consolidation easier. Many chemistry concepts can be easily and efficiently memorized with the help of mnemonics. For example, in chemistry, the electronic configuration is the distribution of electrons of an atom or molecule in atomic or molecular orbitals. The sequence of orbitals that has to be filled when electrons are entering can be remembered with the help of the mnemonic “Sober Physicists Don’t Find Giraffes Hiding In Kitchens.”  Here the first letter of each term correlates with the order of the orbitals that have to be filled with electrons.

  • Understand rather than memorizing

Many students memorize everything they read without really understanding. This puts them in a difficult place when exams are structured in a way where the application of knowledge is tested. Be selective about the things you memorize. But remember, under no circumstances should memorization replace understanding. When we study, we should focus our efforts on understanding concepts rather than memorizing every last detail.

These are a few tips that will help you study chemistry in a better and efficient way. Above all, Keep trying! Everyone learns at different speeds and in different ways.
