An exquisite airport situated in Devanahalli, Karnataka, Kempegowda International Airport is one of the prime examples of a modern airport with world-class facilities. It serves the capital city of Karnataka, Bangalore. It was a replacement for the relatively old HAL airport that is located only 10 kilometres from the centre of the city.
History of the Kempegowda International Airport
With the rapid development of Bangalore and its emergence as the tech hub of India, a more sophisticated airport was needed to match the growing demand for air transport. There was a complete lack of space in the HAL airport for any sort of expansion. This led to the planning of the Kempegowda International Airport in 1991. Devanahalli, a small village 40 kilometres away from the city, was chosen as the location to construct the new airport. S Ramanathan, the chairman of the National Airports Authority of India, and his panel of experts were behind this major undertaking.
The state government put its foot forward and demanded funds from the union government for construction of the airport in 1994. It was approved by the union government. Planning and construction began with assistance from private organizations. Tata Group, Raytheon, and Singapore Changi Airport joined hands in December 1995 in order to sign a MOU that stated that they would be working together on this massive project. The public share in the company was only 26% while the private share was 74%. It was only on the 2nd of July, 2005, that the construction of the airport began with full clearance from all government agencies and private landowners in the region.
There were certain issues during the opening of the airport in 2008 like the AAI employee strike. HAL airport staff was afraid they would lose their jobs. These issues were quickly addressed and solutions were found for all the local problems. Although the original name of the airport was simply ‘Bangalore International Airport’, a proposal was sent to the Union Government to change the name to Kempegowda International Airport. In 2012, the proposal was accepted by the Union Government. It came into effect in July, 2013.
Ownership of the Airport
The Kempegowda International Airport is under the ownership of BIAL, which is a short-form for Bangalore International Airport Limited. It is a public limited company that was authorized to operate the airport for up to 30 years. Out of the 26% that is held by public companies, 13% is owned by Karnataka State Industrial Investment and Development Corporation and the remaining 13% is held by the Airports Authority of India. Out of the 74% that is owned by private organizations, Fairfax Financial owns 48% and Siemens Project Ventures owns 26%.
Facilities in the Airport
The airport has a wide range of facilities including a well-engineered runway and terminal. An additional runway and a terminal is still under construction under the Phase 2 development scheme.
